Everton shoot down reports of late Richarlison exit
Having signed for Everton to play for Marco Silva, it is no surprise that Richarlison has been regularly linked with an exit ever since the Portuguese was sacked. The move for Silva was seen as a total flop, but the Brazil international has become one of the key players for the Toffees.
In his time at the club, he has established himself as one of the best forwards in English football, and has regularly been linked with moves away. At 24, the player was believed to be keen to move on this summer to play UEFA Champions League football.
However, no deal is likely to happen this summer, with the Brazilian now set to stick around. With Kylian Mbappe almost certain to leave Paris Saint-Germain this August, there was some talk that the Parisians would make a move for Richarlison. The clubs Director of Football, Leonardo, is a known fan of the player and has spoken glowingly of him in the past. Current manager Mauricio Pochettino is also a fan. Even with interest from a major club like PSG, though, Everton have made clear that any talk of a sale is not coming from the club.
Indeed, the club’s manager Rafael Benitez was quick to come out and shoot down talk of any potential sale. Having started with a win and a draw, Everton fans are quickly warming to the spiky Spaniard who managed their rivals for so many years. Despite what feels like a rather uneasy alliance, Benitez has been quick to fight the club’s corner – and was very quick to bite back on any talk of Richarlison leaving.
The ex-Real Madrid coach came out to dismiss any notion of a key player being sold this close to the end of the transfer window.
What was said about Richarlison leaving Everton?
When asked about the rumours at his pre-match press conference, Benitez shot down any suggestions that his star player could be sold on. He said: "We are not considering selling him,
"He's our player, we're really pleased with him, really happy, and hopefully he can score a lot of goals this year for us."
Benitez is not one known for simply saying things to the press for the sake of it. The manager has a long history of being calculated with how he addresses the media, and understands the power of keeping fans onside. Especially with the unease that his appointment was met with, some fans will want to see Benitez be totally honest with them as he tries to win their trust.
At the moment, then, there is no likely exit for Richarlison this summer that can be organised in time. Everton are keen to retain their best players, and would be seen as a selling club if they moved on from Richarlison this late in the window. Expect the player, then, to stick around at Everton for at least one more season as he continues to elevate his reputation.30.08.2021 < Back
